Gerald served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24J "The Horrible Monster" #44-40690, 864th Bomber Squadron, 494th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He is noted as residing in California prior to the war. His enlistment record was not found. He is shown on the WWII Army Casualties listing in Sheridan County, Wyoming. He was possibly from Sheridan County, Wyoming and is listed as California since that is where his wife was from.

B-24J #44-40690 took off from Tacloban, Leyte Island, Philippines for a bombing mission over Anguar Island, Palau. They crashed and burned on Samar Island, Philippines shortly after takeoff for an unknown reason.

Gerald was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
