He registered for the first peacetime draft in US history in October 1940 at the age of 24, described as having brown hair and brown eyes. He stood six feet tall. He became a pilot in the 18th Fighter Group, 44th Fighter Squadron and served in the Pacific Theater. He is noted by the P-38 Association (https://p38assn.org/aces/aces-full.htm) as an "ace" with 8 kills (also shown as 14 kills in other sources, although the 8 may have been those only in a P-38). He also flew the P-40 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal.
