Orville served as a Technical Sergeant & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-25D #41-30040, 498th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Los Angeles County, California & was previously a member of the California National Guard prior to the war.

The National Guard unit he was previously a member of was called into full time active Army service on November 14, 1941, prior to the war, from Sherwood Field, Paso Robles, California. Since he had only been out of the Guard for less than three months he was called back into service with the unit. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a grounds keeper and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25D #41-30040 took off, with a crew of 7 & other B-25's, from Nadzab Airfield, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Dagua Airfield, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.

After a bombing run they were seen entering a cloud and were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost.

Orville was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
