Cpl McCutcheon was last seen on the first day of the invasion of Guadalcanal. He was walking on the flank of his company.
When his company set up camp that night, he was discovered missing. No one knew what happened to him, and his body was never recovered. Cpl McCutcheon is thought to be one of the first American casualties of the Guadalcanal Campaign.
