Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until December 17, 1945.

Son of Mrs. Mary Mannion who resided in New York City, New York.

John served as a Corporal & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-17F "Fighting Swede" #41-24520, 63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 3, 1941, prior to the war, in New York City, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #41-24520 took off from Jackson Drome, Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a reconnaissance mission over Madang Province, Papua New Guinea.

They later reported, via radio, that they were 50 miles north of Madang Province. They were not heard from and did not return to base. The entire crew of 10 was lost on this mission.

John was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the "Silver Star", "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal, and the Purple Heart.
