Gerald was the son of Elmer F. Champlin & Ruth M. Harrison.

He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a radio technician and gunner assigned to a bombing squadron. He was severely wounded during the Battle of Bougainville, Solomon Islands and died on board a hospital ship bound for Guadalcanal. Gerald was buried at sea. (According to his widow).

Geoffrey Roecker, who maintains a most commendable website called "missingmarines.com" supplied the following information about Gerald in July 2019:

"Sergeant Champlin served as a radioman with VMSB-131, a Marine squadron that flew TBF Avenger torpedo bombers. He participated in the Guadalcanal campaign, where he was slightly wounded in action on 13 November 1942.
"On 2 February 1943, Sergeant Champlin participated in a strike against Japanese warships operating near Munda, New Georgia, in the Solomon Islands. His aircraft was TBF-1 Bureau Number 05901 (pilot, Captain Arthur T. Molvik; gunner, SSgt. Robert T. Gough).
"This aircraft did not return from the mission, and the entire crew was listed as missing in action the following day. No trace was ever found, and they were finally declared dead on 3 February 1945."
