Robert served as a Staff Sergeant & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-25D #41-30319, 405th Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Onondaga County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 2, 1942 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Apprentice to a trade and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25D #41-30319 took off, with a crew of 5, from Durand Strip (17-Mile Drome), near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on a strike mission over Wewak, Papua New Guinea.

They were attacked and shot down by Japanese Zeros near the target. They were hit in the right engine. They were seen burning, as they went down, in the fuselage and bomb bay areas and were also seen crashing into the sea near the coast.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the "Silver Star with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster" and the Purple Heart.
