Philip served as a First Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-24J #42-100262, 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Accountant and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-100262 took off with a crew of 10, on a bombing mission over Babo Airfield, West Papua Province, Indonesia. Due to weather problems B-24J #42-100262 changed course to the secondary target of Ransiki, Indonesia.

Just after "bombs away" they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire which disabled the #2 and #3 engines. They tried to make it back to the Kamiri Airfield, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia but had to ditch in the sea just off Kamiri. Only 3 of the crew survived the ditching.

Philip was declared "Missing In Action" in this ditching during the war.
