1st Lt. Bellanca was the co-pilot of PBJ-1D Mitchell (BuNo. 35086), (a Navy/Marine version of the USAAF B-25 Mitchell Bomber). He served with VMB-443, MAG-61, 1st MAW, FMF. He and his crew departed Emirau Airfield, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea, were shot down over Kavieng Peninsula, New Ireland on 16 September 1944.
