James served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-24J #44-41184, 65th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

B-24J #44-41184 took off from Tacloban Strip, Leyte, Philippines on a courier mission to Owi Island, Schouten Islands, Indonesia. After takeoff this B-24 was never seen or heard from again. The entire crew was lost.

James was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded an Air Medal.
