Joseph's remains, along with everyone on C-47A #42-23510, were recovered in 2004 and identified on April 13, 2009. They were all interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia on July 15, 2010.

Joseph served as a First Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on C-47A #42-23510, 4th Squadron, 62nd Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Joseph normally served with the 82nd Bomber Squadron, 12th Bomber Group, Medium, but was assigned to this flight.

He resided in Nassau County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 21, 1942 in Witchell, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Stock clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47A #42-23510 departed Dinjan, India on an airdrop mission to resupply Allied forces near Myitkyina, Burma. When the crew failed to return, air and ground searches found no evidence of the aircraft along the intended flight path. It was later discovered that they crashed in Myanmar (Burma) during the war.

Joseph was first declared "Missing In Action" and later his status was changed to "Killed In Action".

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
