Charles served as a Corporal & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-25J #43-36161, 500th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Harris County, Texas & was a member of the Texas National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on November 25, 1940, prior to the war, from Houston, Texas. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25J #43-36161 took off, with a crew of 6, on a bombing mission over Fabrica Airfield, Negros, Philippines. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and the pilot, 2nd Lt. William P. Simpson, made the decision to ditch in the sea. 4 crew members survived and 2 were lost in this ditching.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" in this ditching during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Charles also has a "Cenotaph" in the Magnolia Cemetery, Woodville, Texas.

Those who survived included: 2nd Lt. William P. Simpson ( Pilot ~ who was later killed on another B-25 mission ). The other three survived the war which included: 2nd Lt. Richard J. Lewis ( Co-Pilot ), 2nd Lt. Jack A. Williams ( Bmb/Nav ), and Sgt Clyde W. Kline ( Engineer ).
