Shoffstall joined the Marines on October 11, 1939; he must have showed exceptional promise while at boot camp in San Diego, for he was promoted to Private First Class in January, 1940. Shoffstall served with the HQ detachment in San Diego – he may have been an instructor at the recruit depot – and by April was on his way overseas. PFC Shoffstall joined Company A, First Battalion, Fourth Marines in Shanghai that June, and served with them for the rest of the year. PFC Shoffstall traveled with the Fourth Marines to the Philippines in late 1941 to help prepare defenses against the predicted Japanese attack. He fought through the Philippine campaign, and participated in the siege of Corregidor. PFC Shoffstall was killed on May 6, 1942, when the Japanese overran Corregidor. His exact fate is unknown.
