CASUALTIES: CAPT. SHERIDAN, LT. GRIFFITH KILLED ON JAP TRANSPORT
Capt. DENNIS PATRICK SHERIDAN, JR., and Second Lieut. John G. Griffith lost their lives on December 15, 1944, on a Jap transport while being transferred to Japan with other prisoners of war, the war department Wednesday had notified their next of kin.
Both officers were taken prisoner on Bataan. They were taken from Bilibid prison for the trip to Japan on the last prison ship to leave before that camp's liberation. The ship was sunk by American forces.
Captain SHERIDAN graduated from Alamo Heights High school and St. Mary's university, where he was a well known baseball and basketball star. He entered the service in 1939, going to the Philippine Islands in 1941.
Survivors include his parents who live at 145 Elizabeth place; brothers, Warrant Officer W.O. Edwards, who has been in Europe 23 months and who is expected home shortly, Marine Cpl. Tom Sheridan, now home on leave from the Southwest Pacific, and Phil, 17, student at St. John's seminary; also five sisters.
Lieutenant Griffith's wife, Mrs. Patsy Kenney Griffith, and son, John G. Griffith, 4, live with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Nat M. Kenney, 222 East Poplar street.
He went overseas in January, 1941, and was serving with the air forces at Nichols Field when the Japs attacked. Mrs. Nichols was evacuated in May, 1941. Survivors include also his mother, Mrs. W. O. Clark, and sister, Mrs. Andrew Taylor, both of Cincinnati.
