James Kelley Nichols (33, 05 October 1907, Nacogdoches, Texas), a resident of 604 Richmond St., Houston, Harris County, Texas, signed up for his World War II Draft Registration Card (Serial No. 1802, Order No. 3223) on 16 October 1940 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. He was employed by the Houston Linen Service. James listed his sister, Clara Lillian Garrison, as the person who would always know his address. He was described as 5' 8" in height, 145 lbs., with a dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.

James Kelly Nichols enlisted in the U.S. Navy (S/N 6243101) on 28 January 1942 in Houston, Texas. He was received on board the destroyer U.S.S. Gwin (DD-433 on 28 December 1942.

Electrician's Mate Third Class James Kelly Nichols, U.S. Navy was serving aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Gwin (DD-433) when she was hit by a Japanese torpedo in the early morning hours of 13 July 1943 amidships in her engine room and exploded in the Battle of Kolombangara (in Kula Gulf off the northeastern coast of Kolombangara in the Solomon Islands). Two officers and 59 men were killed or missing. James was one of those missing. He was officially declared dead in 10 August 1945. The ship was so badly damaged that she had to be scuttled.
