During a 15 July 1944 bombing raid over Yap Island, B-24J 44-40555 (Diederich plane) and B-24J 42-73119 (Sylor plane) collided in mid-air while being chased by Japanese planes. While the accounts of the details of the collision vary significantly, there is no evidence of survival of any of the 22 men.

Efforts to locate that wreckage and others have been made by Pat Ranfranz, who lost his uncle over Yap Island on 25 June 1944. He has tirelessly searched for the planes and 129 men still missing. Read more about his project at http://www.missingaircrew.com/.
