Joe resided in Martin County, Texas prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 18, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a filling station attendant and also as Single, without dependents.

Joe served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer / Gunner on B-24D #42-40856, 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

B-24D #42-40856 took off, with a crew of 10, from Carney Field, Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands on a bombing mission over northern New Georgia Island, Western Province, Solomon Islands. They are believed to have crashed at sea shortly after takeoff for an unknown reason.

Joe was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war. Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 3, 1946. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
