William served as a Seaman, First Class, on the U.S.S. Blakeley (DD–150), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in New York State prior to the war.

He was declared "Missing In Action" when the Blakeley was torpedoed by German Submarine U-156 under the command of Werner Hartenstein off Martinique, French West Indies during the war. The Blakeley lost 60 feet of her bow, however it survived and returned for repairs.

The Blakeley was the only U.S. World War I era destroyer that was not sunk after being torpedoed by German U-boats.

William was awarded a Purple Heart.
