Charles served as a Major, Infantry, U.S. Army during World War II.

He is noted in some records as residing in Texas and in other records as in Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Charles was taken as a Prisoner of the Japanese Army in the Philippines during the war. He was originally held at Camp 1, Cabanatuan, Nueva Province, Luzon, Philippines after his capture.

Charles was "Killed In Action" as a passenger of the Japanese transport ship "Enoura Maru" which was bombed by American planes from the U.S.S. Hornet while it was in Takao Harbor during the war. The Hornet, of course, did not know that the ship held American POW's but assumed it was being used to possibly transport military supplies.

A total of approximately 470 American POW's died during the bombing.

Charles was awarded the "Silver Star", Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
