US Supreme Court Justice. He served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1965 until 1969. The son of Jewish parents who operated a store, Abe thrived at school and graduated from Southwestern College. He received his degree from Yale Law School and became a member of their teaching staff. Fortas initiated his association with politics when he was given a position in the Securities and Exchange Commission and later served as general counsel for the public Works Administration. During World War II, he worked in the Department of Interior and was elevated to undersecretary of the department. He went on to form his own law firm in Washington. During the 1950s, Fortas became known as the defense attorney for author Owen Lattimore during the McCarthy hearings. Fortas (who became friends with Lyndon Johnson during the 1940s) was appointed by President Johnson to succeed Arthur Goldberg as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, when Goldberg became an ambassador to the United Nations following the death of Adlai Stevenson. While on the high court, Fortas supported the landmark decision in Miranda V. Arizona in which it became mandatory for the police to inform suspects of their rights when taken into custody. President Johnson appointed Fortas to succeed Earl Warren as Chief Justice, however he failed to gain approval from the Senate due to his close relationship with the President. Fortas resigned his position as associate justice in 1969, after he came under scrutiny for accepting money in exchange for speaking engagements. He resumed practicing law privately and formed a second successful Washington firm. Fortas died from a ruptured aorta.
