HMS Bonaventure (Capt. H.G. Egerton, RN) joined the escort of convoy GA-8 made up of the transports HMS Breconshire and Cameronia, with escort destroyers HMAS Stuart, HMS Griffin and HMS Hereward bound from Piraeus, Greece to Alexandria, Egypt (Operation LUSTRE). First action was around 20:30 hours, the Italian submarine Dagabur made an unsuccesful torpedo attack on HMS Bonaventure.

Around 02:45 / 03:00 hours, HMS Bonaventure was hit amidships on starboard side by two torpedoes fired by the Italian submarine Ambra about 100 nautical miles south-south-east of Crete in position 33º20'N, 26º35'E. Extensive flooding caused sinking within 6 minutes taking 23 officers and 115 ratings with her. 310 survivors were picked up by HMAS Stuart and HMS Hereward.
HMAS Stuart heavily depth charged the Italian submarine, but she managed to escape.

Next of Kin: Son of John Goymer, and of Ellen Jane Goymer, of Forton, Gosport, Hampshire. His brother, Royal Marine Valentine Jellicoe Goymer died during an air raid on the Gosport area on 10th March 1941 with his wife.
