He originally enlisted on May 24, 1915 with the 42nd Battalion CEF (Black Watch Royal Highlanders of Canada) but was commissioned from the ranks and In 1916, he was posted to 87th Battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) as Lieutenant.
He served in France and was wounded and invalided back to England twice. Both times he returned to the battlefield.
Son of Frank and Gussie Youkles, formerly of Russia.
Note*: He stated on his attestation papers that he was born in New York, New York but another source ( (British Jewry Book of Honour WWI written by Rabbi Dr. H. Abramowitz, Senior Chaplain to the British Forces)) says he was born in Russia.
