When John enlisted for WWI at New Westminster BC on 22 March 1915, he was 5'9" with blue eyes and dark hair, religion Presbyterian, and his mother was living at Glamis. Previously with 11th Reg't Irish Fusilliers of Canada infantry, John was assigned to 47th Overseas Battalion. He was sent to Bramshott England on 13 Nov 1915 and to France on 2 March 1916. There is an article with a picture of him in uniform in the Paisley Advocate on 19 Dec 1917. John was a messenger, always cheerful, and devoted to duty; he was awarded the Military Medal when— at Arleux 28 April 1917 -- he made several trips under heaviest shellfire back to Company HQ with messages, bandaged a wounded comrade, and took him out to a dressing station. He was at Hill 70 near Lens, with the 1st Machine Gun 2nd Company, when he was killed in action on 16 Aug 1917.
