On September 9, 1944, he was the Top Turret Gunner aboard B-17 43-38092 of the 379th Bomb Group, 527th Bomb Squadron, when it was downed by a direct flak hit in the bomb bay over the target Mannheim, A/C disintegrated and crashed at Ludwigshafen, Germany. He is buried in the US Military Cemetery at St. Avold, France. Hi s awards were the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart
