John, who resided at 1422 Stapler Place, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Turret Gunner on B-17 #42-97962 " Casey's Strawberry Blonde ", 401st Bomb Group, Eighth Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

B-17 #42-97962 took off on a bombing mission over Mannheim, Germany. Near their target they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire in the area of the Radio Room. Engines #3 & #4 caught fire and soon the B-17 broke in half near the radio room and was seen crashing.

John, was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He had served in the Air Corps for one year and six months at the time of his death and was decorated with an Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart.
