Memorial services were held Sunday in the Baptist church for Pvt. Charles V. Mitchell, who was killed in action in France, Jan. 11 [1945].
The Rev. G.E. Forssell preached the sermon and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Obye sang “Abide With Me.” A mixed quartette sang two numbers “The Lord’s Prayer” and “God Be with You Till We Meet Again.” The American Legion conducted part of the service and presented a flag to Mrs. Mitchell.
Pvt. Charles V. Mitchell was born in December, 1919, at Fenton, Iowa. He attended the Estherville public schools.
He was employed by the Estherville Cooperative creamery and for some time was manager of the Farmer’s produce station.
On December 5, 1938 Private Mitchell married Helen R. Mason at Sioux Falls, S.D. They have four children Janice, Dennis, Richard and Donald. Donald was one month and two days old when his father saw him the first and last time.
Mitchell was inducted into the army April 19, 1944 at Camp Dodge. From Camp Dodge he was sent to Camp Roberts, Calif., where he took his training in the U.S. Infantry. After completing his training, he came home on a 10-day furlough which he spent with his family and friends. After his furlough he was sent to Fort Meade, Md., port of embarkation and was sent overseas in October. He landed in England and later was sent to France. On January 11, he was reported missing in action and four months later was reported as killed in action and on the same date.
Besides his widow and four children he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Mitchell of Estherville, and five brothers, Ernest Mitchell of Mallard, Ia., Clarence Mitchell of Granada, Minn., Leonard Mitchell of Waterloo, Ia., Roy Mitchell of Des Moines, Ia., and Leo Mitchell of Estherville. Two sisters also survive – Emily Dixon of Mason City and Maribell Hunt of Dodge Center, Minn. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, June 28, 1945)
