Alfred Allen Maybach Jr., was born 20 March 1915 at Colon, Republic of Panama, the son of Captain Alfred A. Maybach, USMA Class of 1901, and Elmira (Capron) Maybach. He was educated in Washington, D.C., at Army Post schools at Fort Monroe, Virginia; in Panama and in Corregidor, Philippine Islands. In the Philippines, he attended Bishop Brent's school in Baguio. Upon the death of his parents, he lived with family in Rhode Island, attended Stanton Preparatory Academy and graduated from the New York Military Academy in Cornwall, New York.

Appointed to the Military Academy from Rhode Island, he graduated as a second lieutenant in the Infantry and was assigned to the 13th Infantry Battalion at Fort Devens Massachusetts. While stationed at Fort Devens, he married Katharine S. Howland of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The couple had one son ans one daughter. In September 1939, the 18th Infantry Brigade, of which the 13th Infantry Battalion was a part, was ordered to the Panama Canal, stationed at Fort Davis. In 1940, Lieutenant Maybach transferred to the Coast Artillery (the branch of the Army in which his father had served) and was assigned to the 82nd Coast Artillery at Fort Randolph, Panama Canal Zone, as a Battery Commander. In June 1940, he was promoted to first lieutenant and in September to temporary captain. Having transferred back to the Infantry, he reported to the 51st Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division at Pine Camp, New York, in December 1941. In June 1942, Alfred Maybach was promoted to major, having become the battalion commander then soon promoted to lieutenant colonel. The 4th Armored Division's training took him to the Desert Training Center, Needles California; Fort Hood Texas; and, in December 1943, overseas to England.

In early July 1944, the 4th Armored Division crossed the English Channel into France and then fought their way to the German border during up to the end of the year. Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Maybach, Jr., died of wounds received in action in Eastern France in the first days of November 1944. During the four months in which he led his battalion in combat, Col. Maybach was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. Posthumously, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

A memorial organ stop in the Cadet Chapel was given in 1947 in memory of both Colonel Alfred A. Maybach, '01 and Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Maybach, Jr.
