William served as a Staff Sargeant in the 401st Bombardment Group (Heavy), 615th Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a left waist gunner on a B-17G bomber when the aircraft was lost near Dessau, Germany on 28 May 1944 during an operational bombing mission targeting an oil refinery.

William entered the service from Missouri.
