Melvern served as a Staff Sergeant & Turret Gunner on B-24 (#42-51401), 512th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Nebraska prior to the war.

Melvern was "Killed In Action" when his B-24 was shot down and crashed in Austria during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
