"Operation Tidal Wave" one of the most daring raids of WW2. Coming in at tree top level the Sky Scorpions destroy the Steaua Romana oil refinery. The refinery does not produce oil for six months. The 389th earns Presidential Unit Citation, all of the crews receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, The 389th BG loses six aircraft on this mission.

Sergent Hammond appears on the Ploesti roster of the 2002 revised edition Ploesti TDY 98th Bomb Group FO Salyer Crew. Later was killed along with several other of his Ploesti crew mates in action with the 720 Squadron 450 BG based in Italy. That crew piloted by Captain Donald a. Buck. It is unclear how and why Mccaughey, Hammond, Cilli, Wessel, became members of the 450 BG.
