While approaching their target and just before "bombs away" they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire causing them to crash near Vienna. 3 of the crew ( Capt. Williams, 1st Lt. Allen E. Sutera, and Sgt. William Draper, Jr. ) were able to bail out before the crash and became POW's. The other 7 members of the crew were lost in the crash.
Hugo was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded a "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Purple Heart.
