Hugo served as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator / Gunner on B-24G #42-78099, 741st Bomber Squadron, 455th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 23, 1943 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Foremen and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24G #42-78099 took off, with a crew of 10, from Italy on a bombing mission over Vienna, Austria. While approaching their target and just before "bombs away" they were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire causing them to crash near Vienna. 3 of the crew ( Capt. Williams, 1st Lt. Allen E. Sutera, and Sgt. William Draper, Jr. ) were able to bail out before the crash and became POW's. The other 7 members of the crew were lost in the crash.

Hugo was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded a "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Purple Heart.
