John served as a Second Lieutenant and Bombardier on B-17G (#42-31308), 364th Bomber Squadron, 305th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in New York State prior to the war.

John was "Killed In Action" when the B-17G he was on was shot down by flax over Geißelhardt, Germany during the war and was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
