Charles served as a Second Lieutenant & Navigator on B-24H #41-28894, 747th Bomber Squadron, 456th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Charles was normally assigned to the 457th Bomber Group but either was assigned or volunteered for this mission with the 456th.

He resided in Suffolk County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 16, 1941 in Richmond, Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Toolmaker and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles was "Killed In Action", while on a bombing mission, when his B-24 was shot down by German Anti-Aircraft and crashed near Wiener Neustadt, Austria during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Son of Marie M. Berreen who resided in Sag Harbor, New York.
