The Evening Independent (Massillon, Ohio) - 7 Aug, 1944, Mon - Pilot Missing Since July 19 - Lt. William C. Arther, jr. 21, son of Major and Mrs. William C. Arther, former residents of this city, has been missing in action over Germany since July 19, according to a telegram received by his mother from the war department last week. Lieut. Arther co-piloted a Flying Fortress. He enlisted in the army air force in April, 1942, while a student at Cornell university and went overseas early in June of this year. Major and Mrs. Arther reside in Mount Lebanon, Pittsburgh, Pa., but the former, who is in the combat intelligence division of the air corps, has been stationed in India, Burma and China the past 2 years. They have 2 other children, Miss Barbara Jean Arther, who is dietician of Mount Lebanon high school and Richard, a student at Mount Lebanon high school. Mrs. L. J. Hanson and Mrs. C. C. Dalsky of this city are sisters of Major Arther and Mrs. J E. Willison is a sister of Mrs. Arther.

He was listed as missing in action July 19, 1944, over Augsburg, Germany. Lt. Arther was a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He attended Cornell University. He was an Eagle Scout. Enlisting while in college, he was called to service April 11, 1943, and went overseas in June 1944, completing seven missions. His father, Lt. Col. William C. Arther, has been in the Asiatic area since September 1942. Lt. Arther is survived by his parents, a sister, Barbara Jeanne, and a brother, Richard.
