Douglas served as a Private, 262nd Infantry Regiment, 66th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 26, 1944 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes and also as Single, without dependents.

Douglas was declared "Missing In Action" when the S.S. Léopoldville, on which he was a passenger, was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U-486 while sailing between Southampton and Cherbourg during the war.

Approximately 763 soldiers were killed in this attack along with 56 crew members of the Léopoldville.

Douglas was awarded the Purple Heart.
