Stanley served as a Private, 264th Infantry Regiment, 66th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 28, 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was noted as being employed as a oiler of machinery and also as Single, without dependents.

Stanley was declared "Missing In Action" when the S.S. Léopoldville, on which he was a passenger, was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine U-486 while sailing between Southampton and Cherbourg during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Approximately 763 soldiers were killed in this attack along with 56 crew members of the Léopoldville.
