Salvatore served as a Private, Company C, 1st Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regt, 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

Some records show his first name as "Samuel" (which may have been a nickname) and his last name spelled as Laferera.

He resided at 1824 Clifford Avenue, Rochester, Monroe County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on July 18, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted as being employed as an Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" during the D-Day invasion of France when his plane was shot down near Picauville, France and was awarded a Purple Heart.
