Chaplain (Capt.)Raymond J Hansen grew up in Augusta, Wisconsin and spoke both German and Danish. Practiced as a Protestant Chaplain at the Evangelical United Brethren Church-Augusta, Wisconsin.

As a chaplain in the Army, Hansen was often in the line of fire. Chaplains routinely helped the wounded and conducted services at temporary graves close to the battlefield. On June 6, 1944, Hansen's unit, the 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, landed on Utah Beach. Five days later, Chaplain Hansen was killed, a month short of his 32nd birthday.
