Before the war, CPT Aigner graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1939. CPT Aigner served as a Co Pilot on Horsa Glider Jl-161 and crashed with the Pilot and two members from the 82nd Airborne Division near Blosville, France due to German gun fire.

The Pilot and a passenger survived, but the Pilot died in Holland, during Operation Market Garden.
