Educated in Toronto, Walter went on to study medicine at the University of Toronto, joining the Royal Flying Corps in Apr 1917.

He died when his 28 TS’s Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5 (#B563) aircraft (a British biplane fighter aircraft of the First World War), in a steep low turn manoeuvre, crashed near the Castle Bromwich aerodrome.
