Major, United States Marine Corps. Entered the service from South Carolina (the Memorial mistakenly lists South Dakota; the Memorial also lists 16 January 1946, the date he was officially declared dead). Awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. McCown was the pilot of an F-4U Corsair aircraft that failed to return from a combat mission over Rabaul, New Britain, Papua New Guinea, and was originally listed as Missing in Action / Buried at Sea. His remains were recovered in 1991 but not positively identified and returned to the family until 2008.

He is now buried at the Unitarian Church Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.
