WOODS GENEALOGY - Donald Robert Woods:
Alonzo was always willing to try something new. He heard about a bulk food store in Detroit that was doing very well.
The theme was direct from the case to the basket. The store just had cases of food, and the bare minimum markup.
He decided to try this system. He rented a salesroom in Hamilton, bought the boxes of goods, opened on Wednesday night and overturned all of the inventory by Saturday. The Police escorted him home every Saturday night because of the large amount of cash
the store took in. He opened several very successful "Big Box" style grocery stores in Hamilton, and had the first cafeteria in Hamilton.
He sold the stores in 1929 and began selling life insurance.
His insurance business was very successful; many wanted to buy it, and he sold it in 1935.
He was one of the first in the family to have a house trailer; he and Mabel traveled extensively, especially in the States. They often drove their trailer to Florida. They owned a house in Samosett, Florida and built a house in Bradenton, Florida.
About 1945 they moved to a house at Burlington, Ontario.
