Former Columbian Dies at Macon Hospital After Operation-Native of Fairfield County

The funeral of the late Ebenezer E Douglas, who died in a hospital in Macon Thursday evening, will be held in Columbia this afternoon and the interment will be in Elmwood cemetery. The body was brought to Columbia yesterday afternoon and placed in Trinity church, where it will rest until 5:30 o'clock this afternoon, when the services will be conducted by the Rev Kirkman G Finlay, rector of the church.

On all sides yesterday were heard expressions of sorrow at the passing of this universally popular former Columbian. During the many years of his residence here there was no more widely liked man in Columbia than "Eb" Douglas; his genuineness of character, his simple directness and sincerity of manner, his ready with and geniality made their strong appeal and he was appreciated especially by men. A prominent member of the Metropolitan club from the time of its organization, Mr Douglas was always a favorite among the members of all ages and sets and general regret was felt when he moved to Greenville a few years ago.

While in Columbia Mr Douglas was chief clerk in the executive office of the South Carolina Cotton Oil company, now the Union Seed and Fertilizer company, under H E Wells, vice president. His removal to Greenville to manage the company's mill in that city was a decided promotion and another advance was won when he became manager of the larger mill in Macon.

Mr Douglas had not been in perfect health for a number of months and recently physicians pronounced an operation necessary. His sister, Miss Eugenia Douglas, and brother, Albert G Douglas of Columbia, went to Macon Wednesday and the operation was performed Thursday. Although he stood the ordeal well, his strength failed afterwards and the end came suddenly at 7:30 in the evening.

On October, 1910, Mr Douglas was married to Miss Caroline Porcher Heyward of Greenville, the daughter of R B Heyward of Colleton county. She survives him with two daughters, Mary Porcher Douglas and Laura Heyward Douglas, aged 2 and 1, respectively. Mr Douglas was born June 23, 1879, at "Albion," the plantation in Fairfield county of his father, the late John Simonton Douglas, and was one of a large family of children. His surviving brothers and sisters are: Mrs W F Marion of Chester, William Douglas, who lives at the old home in Fairfield; Charles A Douglas, prominent Washington attorney; Albert G Douglas of Columbia and the Rev John Walkup Douglas, pastor of the Roland Park Baptist church, Baltimore. Mrs Marion and Miss Evelyn Douglas, a daughter of the late John Calvin Douglas, arrived last night and the brothers from Washington and Baltimore are expected this noon.

The pallbearers will be: Honorary, George L Baker, George W Waring, H E Wells, M C Robertson, Thornwell Muller and George Brunson of Greenville; active, Albert R Heyward, A M Meetze, A S Gailliard, R H McDowell, A M Gibbes and J M Bell.
