Joseph Clement Clarke, son of Thomas William Clarke and Jane Clarke, formerly Boreham, was born on 29 August 1882, at Camden Fort, Crosshaven, Carrigaline, Co. Cork.
His father was a Master Gunner in the Royal Artillery.
His parents were married in Orsett district, Essex, England in 1876.

Joseph became a pupil at The Royal Hibernian Military School, Phoenix Park, Dublin, on 5 December 1891, and enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 13 August 1897

Marriage.
the marriage of Joseph Clarke and Selina Baldock was registered in Birmingham, England, in the quarter ended September 1912.
