Edward Neal Emery was born 6 January 1897 in Ashington, Northumberland, England, the youngest child of Walter (1858-1934)and Mary Elizabeth Bartholomew Emery(1861-1897). His mother died five days after his birth and he was raised by his mother's 1/2 brother, Thomas Neal(e)(1847-1921)and wife Charlotte. Edward grew up in the mining communities of Ashington and Morpeth, Northumberland, England. He shortened his name to "Edward Neal" by the time he was in the Army and when he married Ethel Langley in Northumberland on 16 December 1916. During World War I, Edward served as a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers Battalion, 23rd Battalion (Tyneside Scottish). He was killed in action on 27 August 1917 in France near the Somme.
