My Great Grandfather

James McAnally "Mack" Messer was born in Haywood County, NC to John and Rebecca Messer. Descendant of Captain Robert Messer, regulator known for the "Battle of Alamance" WAS THE FIRST BATTLE OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION"--- (Died June 19, 1771 in Hillsborough, Orange County, Colony of North Carolina).

Mack Messer age 22, enlisted at Sherman, Texas along with his older brother Patten, with the 22nd Texas Calvary, CSA. Pvt. Messer is listed as a bugler. He was wounded in Louisiana and carried from the field of battle by Patten. He served until the end of the war and was mustered out in June 1865 at Milliken, Texas. He was described as having light hair and hazel eyes.

Applied and approved for soldier of confederacy pension at age 75. His occupation was listed as farmer and physical condition as bad.

1.married Elizabeth "Bettie" Wilkerson, Sept. 11, 1864, Fannin County Texas.
Children: Rachel and John Henry Messer.

2.married Nancy "Nannie" Alberty, Sept. 14, 1879,IT Cherokee NW,OK.
Children: George Patten., Lawson, Ruth Rebecca, Charles Anderson, Elizabeth N."Lizzie", & Lucinda Messer.

The Messer family lived on Twist Mountain (also known as Booger Mountain) which overlooks the community of Dutch Mills, Ark. The Messer children helped build the stone/rock fence that surrounded the property. Evidence of that stone fence can be found on Twist Mtn., 100 years later.

Cherokee - The James M. Messer children are listed on the Dawes/Guion Miller Rolls. Granddaughter - Bettie Helena Maples is also listed. Mack Messer sent a letter to the Commission Board verifying he was the grand papa of Bettie Maples, daughter of Rachel & Austin L. Maples.
