Alex was the seventh born child, only son, of nine known children of Duncan Ross and Henrietta Marie Hodgins.

His family migrated from Pontiac, Québec, Canada sometime after May 1898 and before March 1901 to Lacombe, The Territories (Alberta), Canada.

He is enumerated with his parents and siblings:
1901 and 1911, Lacombe, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada.
1916, Sarcee, Edmonton West, Alberta, Canada; Occupation: Teacher in public school.

Residence:
13 March 1916, La Marchand Mansion, Edmonton, Alberta. Occupation: Teacher.
