Captain William Oswald Halpin, second son of William Oswald Halpin [1840-1908] and Anna Maria [née Burgess] Halpin [1848-1933] who were married in Dublin in August 1880.

He was born in Dublin in 1886, and educated at St. Andrew's College, Dublin, and Trinity College, Dublin, from where he graduated in Medicine.

He received his commission as a Temporary Lieutenant in the RAMC on 10 August 1914, and was attached to the 4th [Queen's Own] Hussars. He was promoted to Captain in 1915.
