Son of James Alexander and Barbara Urquhart Martin of 5 Royal Crescent, Armadale, Victoria. He was an insurance clerk prior to enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force in July 1915. He embarked for overseas aboard HMAT "Bulla" (A45) on 25 November 1915. He served in France from April 1916 until March 1917 when he began officer training first in France and then at Cambridge, England. He was appointed to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in August 1917 and returned to the Front. In December 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant. He was killed in action by shell fire at Mont St Quentin, France. He was 25 years of age.
