He graduated with Honors from Middlebury College at Middlebury, Vermont. He was a journalist for The Hill in Washington, D.C. and was known for scooping larger media outlets on high profile stories.
In the hours before dawn on February 22, 1998 he was pursued by Park Police down the Clara Barton Parkway and arrested after his car stalled in some water.
Later, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot.
The National Press Club honors his memory with the annual Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism.
